The \u00eeles Sanguinaires are known worldwide for their unforgettable sunsets, so it comes as no surprise that these islands are in our top 10. The islands are situated 12 kilometres from Ajaccio city centre<\/a>. There is a pleasant walking trail along the coastline where you can visit the Parata Tower, which was built to survey the arrival of invaders who came to the golf of Ajaccio. This tower dates back to 1550, a period where Corsica was taken over by the Genoese.<\/p>\n

2\/ The Genoese neighborhood of Ajaccio<\/h2>\n

3\/ Cretan trail<\/h2>\n

The Cretan trail starts in Ajaccio city centre and stretches across the coastline until the Iles Sanguinaires (the famous islands mentioned earlier). The estimated time of the trail is 3 hours and is accessible for all ages. All along the Cretan trail you will have an amazing view of the sea and of the golf of Ajaccio. During the summer season, it is better to walk across this trail early in the morning, because it gets very hot during the day. A friendly advice: don\u2019t forget to bring a bottle of water with you!<\/p>\n

4\/ Casone Square<\/h2>\n

The official name of this square is called \u201cPlace d\u2019Austerlitz\u201d, but try to ask an Ajaccien where is the \u201cAusterlitz\u201d square, there is a strong chance that they would not know that it even existed. It is commonly known as \u201cPlace du Casone\u201d because before the statute\u2019s construction, a big building was in its place.<\/p>\n

9\/ Shopping by night<\/h2>\n

Every Friday in July and August, Ajaccio\u2019s shops are open from 8pm until late at night. The streets are filled with musicians who play in the bars and on the streets of Ajaccio creating a magical atmosphere.<\/p>\n

10\/ Punta castle<\/h2>\n

The Punta castle (1886-1891) is situated between Ajaccio and Paese di Lava. It was built by the Pozzo di Borgo family and the stones were brought from the Tuileries Palace in Paris.<\/p>\n

This castle overlooks the golf of Ajaccio and it is in the middle of the nature, 600 metres above sea level. The Pozzo di Borgo family was Napoleon\u2019s friend at first and that is why they built the castle. The castle is built on the Milelli property which belongs to the Bonaparte family. However, later on they became worst enemies.<\/p>\n

No\u00ebl Pinzuti said that \u201cthe castle was a meeting point of Corsican history. In the living room there were portraits of Charles-Andr\u00e9 Pozzo di Borgo, Napoleon Bonaparte and Pascal Paoli.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes as no coincidence that the director of cultural affairs of southern Corsica spoke in past tense. Since the fire in 1978, the castle was abandoned and its condition worstened day by day. It is impossible to enter into the castle today. There is a high chance that the castle will soon collapse. A perfect reason for you to go and visit it before it is too late.<\/p>\n
